When I first read "The Story of An Hour" by Kate Chopin, I thought that this was a typical story of a woman who had to deal with the loss of her husband. Due to the fact that she has a heart condition her sister and a friend of her husband had to break the news to her gently. The story then continues with her going off to her room alone to grieve, or so it seems, in reality she feels a wash of content as her bonds have been loosened and she is now free of her husbands oppression. As someone who is getting married, this story did not give me much hope towards marriage as it seems to be that every woman feels like she is being oppressed. If life is so unbearable then do something about it. While I do understand that this story is based on an era where women's liberation was not as strong, I sincerely hope that no woman honestly feels/has felt this way. If you have, steps should be taken to rectify the situation. It is a bit humorous that seeing her husband alive, and realizing that she wasn't free of him at all, was the thing that caused her demise.
